Maximizing the quality of your deep sleep as temperature falls
As the days get shorter and temperatures get colder, it’s important to adjust how one goes to bed at night to get the best sleep possible. It is also just as important to have a mattress that is in quality condition. Serta is dedicated to making sure our customers find falling and staying asleep easy and comfortable this fall/winter season.
Temperature Change and Sleep
When the temperature drops, it is better for sleep cycles as cooler temperatures allow for deep sleep. Laying down cools off the body and cooler temperatures speed up the process of thermoregulation (the maintenance of a particular temperature of the living body). When the temperature drops, the usual first step is to go straight to the thermostat and increase the heat. However, studies show that the prime temperature for sleep is between 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit.
When the heat is on, and higher than 70 degrees Fahrenheit, the body begins to work harder to lower body temperature. This makes it harder for the body to go into a resting state, keeping a person awake longer and more likely to wake up throughout the night. A way to make sure your house is not too hot during the night but at the same time not too cold throughout the day, turn the heat on when you wake up, but off when going to bed.
Quality Mattress for Quality Sleep
Deep sleep also begins with a comfortable mattress. If the summer heat has caused a lot of tossing and turning in sleep, it is likely that lumps, sagging, and noisy springs have become more noticeable, making it time for a new mattress. If a mattress has these issues and is around six to eight years old, it is probably time for a new one.
Over time, allergies like dust mites have gathered, and body impressions have negatively affected the mattress, both affecting not only sleep but physical health. Sagging and lumps affect the spine due to lack of support and pressure. Serta mattresses are built with memory foam which aids in support, pressure relief.
After purchasing a Serta mattress, keeping up good condition is simple:
- Rotate mattress every three to six months
- Vacuum or steam regularly (when changing washing sheets is a perfect chance)
- Keep cool to stop tossing and turning which adds wear and tear
